One of the most common side-effects of consuming cannabis is, of course, the munchies. Junk food, fast food, extra salty and/or sweet snacks, all go hand-in-hand with being stoned. So much so, that some people shy away from cannabis as a way to control their weight and/or eating habits. That said, what if we were to share a few tried and true techniques for avoiding the inevitable? After much research and endless hours of, um … practice? Here are 5 ways to beat the munchies.

1 – Eat Before You Consume

If you know you are going to be smoking at a certain time, plan a balanced meal right before you light up. Feeling nourished lends to more of an energized, clear, and enjoyable cannabis experience. Plus, the pre-high meal will definitely help put off the urge to snack.

2 – Stay Active

The thing with cannabis is it tends to amplify whatever you may be doing. For example, if you’re sitting on the couch watching Netflix, you’ll likely spend an extra hour or so there, more than you would have had you not smoked. On the contrary, if you smoke weed and work out, go for a walk, or work on something creative, you’ll likely spend more time and energy involved in the activity. Hence, evading the distraction of the munchies.

3 – Stay Fresh

Do yourself a favor, as well as those around you. Bring mints. Mints are a great way to take the bitter taste out of your mouth after smoking. Mint is also a natural relaxant, it calms the appetite, and is a great offering to anyone you may be sharing the experience with. Preferably an all natural and/or sugar free mint to avoid the sugary jitters is suggested.

4 – Keep a Stash of Healthy Snacks

Whether you smoke, vape, dab, or eat an edible, the munchies will likely kick in sooner or later. When they do, it’s best to plan for it with a few pre-meditated snacks on hand. Part of the battle with munchies is the impulse to feed on junk food. To trick the mind, a good practice is to prepare for the munchies by having healthy or at least healthier snacks around. When medicated, it’s much more enticing to chill and eat the multi-grain chips and salsa you have at home rather than going through the trouble of getting in the car and driving to the local fast food joint.

5 – Hydrate

Water, water, and more water. Keeping a bottle with you at all times, especially when smoking, keeps the body and the high feeling good. Not to mention, constant hydration does an excellent job of keeping the munchies at bay.

*Fun Fact: the term ‘munchies,’ defined as a craving for sweets or snacks after smoking marijuana, was first officially attested in 1971.
